The Basics of Buying Furniture

Purchasing furniture is generally a long-time investment, so it is important to be knowledgeable about the product that you’re buying and the amount of money you might be spending. These tips and definitions offer a little insight into the vast and sometimes confusing realm of furniture buying.

1. There are three different price ranges in the furniture market: budget, which means affordable, moderate, and expensive. Decide before buying your furniture within which range you would like to purchase.

2. There is a category of “to-the-trade” furniture products, which are exclusive pieces only available for purchase to interior designers, architects, and other professionals with credentials.

3. Pre-assembled, or fully assembled, furniture requires no assembly and is ready to use directly after purchase.

4. Know-down and ready-to-assemble furniture does require assembly by the buyer. These items generally are more cost-friendly than fully assembled furniture.

5. Any furniture that has no upholstery, such as cabinets or tables, are referred to as “case goods.”

6. Furniture covered in upholstery, usually lounge chairs or sofas, is called “upholstered furniture”.

7.  For the sake of safety, the hang tags placed on the furniture by the manufacturer will state whether or not the piece is fireproof or flame-retardant.

Being well-equipped with at least general knowledge of furniture will make your buying experience much less stressful.  Use these tips to make your purchase and enjoy your new furniture for the long run!
