Five DIY Natural Home Scents

If you’re not a fan of using artificial air-fresheners, these natural fragrance medleys will smell perfect in your home! All of these scents are made from natural ingredients to give off a delicious and long-lasting aroma.

For each scent, ingredients will be combined with water in a 2 cup container or pan, and heated on the stove top.  Bring the mixture to a boil and then lower the heat to let them simmer.

1.    Cloves, oranges, and cinnamon: Combine cloves, sliced oranges and whole cinnamon sticks to create a warm scent with a lot of staying power. This scent is a strong one that will be able to aromatize multiple rooms in your home. It can also be reheated for multiple uses.

2.    Vanilla, lemon and rosemary: Unlike the first scent, this one is more mild. It is okay to use vanilla extract, but you will achieve better results if using fresh rosemary. This aroma has a sweetness to it that will leave your room smelling crisp without overpowering it.

3.    Mint, thyme, vanilla extract and lime: This scent takes the cake for most fresh. The aroma it leaves in your home is pleasant, while the mint leaves your nose feeling very refreshed.  Be careful not to use too much mint as it can overpower the other ingredients.

4.    Ginger, almond extract and orange: The almond extract in this scent gives it a particularly sweet aroma. Fresh or powdered ginger will do the trick.

5.    Bay leaves, pine or cedar twigs, and nutmeg: If pine or cedar don’t give off your favorite aroma, you can substitute them for any other fragrant twigs. This combination is complex and will produce more of an earthy smell than the others. Whole nutmeg or powdered nutmeg will work for this scent, however fresh bay leaves are preferred.

Try them all out and choose your favorite!

Oh, wow…I do the orange, cloves and cinnamon at Christmas time. I’m going to try the other scents, I can just smell them right now. Thanks!

The first is definitely a richer holiday smell Teresa, personally I love the ginger, almond extract and orange combination for spring. The smell will energize your entire home for the new season!
