SOTO: The Houston Penetrable

If you haven’t been to the Houston Penetrable exhibit at MFAH by Jesus Rafael Soto, this one of a kind art experience not to be missed (and hurry, it ends Monday, September 1st!). And best of all, this interactive installation is the perfect way to get your kids excited about the arts! It has taken almost a decade to produce and is his only work to be semi-permanent. It’s also one of the few he has created for the indoors.

The exhibit is a kinetic experience of long hanging plastic strands that are meant to be touched, handled and waded through by patrons.  If you step back and look upon the exhibit you will see a giant yellow orb on a transparent background.  Your kids will love being able to physically experience an art piece and have fun moving through the plastic strands.

Don’t forget to check out 8 other pieces by Soto that showcase various stages of his career to better understand the complexity of kinetic art and the ideas expressed by Houston Penetrable.

If you come between noon and 2pm they’re a few food trucks outside the front of the museum to indulge in. Ask for a loyalty card from the eatery of your choice and you can get a free museum entry for each meal purchased with receipt. As another bonus to the loyalty program, if you get your card stamped 10 times total, you can use it to get half off a single person membership to the museum! Kids under 12 are always free, but this way you don’t have to pay for yourself or any older children with you.

The kids can enjoy the beauty and art of the sculpture garden while they eat and be as loud and playful as they want. You can also gain free entry every Thursday to the museum, which also has extended hours that day until 9 pm.

To really round out your cultural day, take the child out to Hermann Park afterwards. Just a short walk down Main Street takes you to Houston’s most visited public park. The park has beautiful lakes and greenery, including a lush Japanese garden.

You can hop onto the mini train for a 1.8 mile ride around the park or rent pedal boats to take out on the lake. If you still have time, the Houston Museum of Natural Science’s unique Cockrell Butterfly exhibit is just across the street.

We hope you have a great time experiencing amazing artwork and all the beauty that Houston has to offer. Stay safe out there in the heat and have fun!
