Not Your Normal Spice Rack

If you’ve been stuffing all of your spices onto shelves in the pantry, or leaving them out on a counter like myself you’re in for a real DIY treat. I just completed this cute spice rack idea from A Beautiful Mess; all your spices and seasonings are clearly labeled – with the labels facing you – and so easy to pop off and use and pop right back.

First, purchase some deep metal tins with clear or filled in lids, that’s really up to your preference. I like the look of the colorful spices peeking through the lids personally, and found some fantastic ones for cheap here.

Now, find a wall or cabinet that is flat and smooth that you can paint over. Grab some chalkboard paint and get to work!

For the containers themselves: trace their shape onto a sheet of magnetic paper – you can find these in 5 packs at Wal-Mart – and cut them out. Adhere them to the back of your tin containers with some strong glue/hot glue. Here’s where you can get creative and funky – you need labels for your containers and you can use plain ones, fun ones, hand drawn ones, or write directly on the tin if you’d like.

Next, just fill your labeled containers with all your spices and stick them to your chalkboard wall, which can now double as a meal planning wall, grocery list, or recipe reminder.  I think the idea of having a handy space to write stuff down in the kitchen is a great idea and it adds to the functionality of an otherwise unused wall or cabinet.

Have fun with your fresh new spice rack and chalkboard wall, post pictures in the comments or let us know how you like it, we always love hearing from you!
