How to Best Use Patterns

With all of the different patterns available in the world of interior design, using them interchangeably can be confusing. It’s hard to know which patterns go together and which patterns you should avoid pairing. This simple guide will help to eliminate perplexity and help you to decorate with patterns confidently.

1. Mix simple geometric patterns with florals.

2. Large-scale patterns are used best when paired with small-scale patterns.

3. If you’re afraid of using too much pattern, stick to the general rule of using three patterns, which differ in scale but are similar in color.

4. Using five patterns in one room is not overkill.  Begin with one large-scaled pattern, allowing it to dominate over the rest of the patterns in the room. Next, use a medium scale floral and one geometric pattern, such as checkers or chevron. As a final touch, scatter two small-scaled patterns in the mix. These small-scale patterns can be your choice of either floral or geometric.

5. Don’t be afraid to use patterns frequently! It’s acceptable to use the same pattern on the furniture, walls and window treatments.

Hopefully with these tips, some simplicity has been injected into the world of pattern and you can decorate your next room unafraid to use them boldly!
