Downtown Houston Bucket List for Summer 2014

It’s summer break and we have a lot of fun to pack in before the kids go back to school! Since Houston is so big, we’re breaking our things-to-do list down to 5 must-do-things in each part of town. Here are the 5 things to do in Downtown Houston, before Summer 2014 kicks the bucket!

1. Enjoy Discovery Green! This parking-lot-turned-park is a gem in Downtown Houston. This green space is packed with families, kayaks, model boats and entertainment. Go for one of the many free events or just go play with the kids!

2. Chill out at Market Square Park! It’s just about 10 blocks from Discovery Green, but it’s got an attitude all it’s own. While Discovery Green is wild and exciting, Market Square Park is cool and calm. Bring your dogs and your kids to grab lunch at Niko Nikos, climb trees, play in the grass and use the dog run. Be sure to also catch the favorite “Houston is Inspired” mural across the street!

3. Burp the Bayou! This silly thing is a favorite with Houston kids. Just down the street from Market Square Park, on the Preston Street Bridge, there is a mysterious red button. It is not marked and you don’t know if you should push it. If you work up the courage to do so, you’re going to hear the bayou gurgle. It’s a goofy thing, but this activity gives you everything you need for some great storytelling and a silly adventure.

4. See Houston from 60 stories high! The JP Morgan Chase tower has a free public observation deck on the 60th floor. Head to the building on a weekday, during working ours, and see it for yourself.  When you arrive, the guard at the front can direct you the express elevators and the best view of Downtown Houston!

5. Go underground! Downtown Houston has miles of tunnels under the city, filled with restaurants and shops. You can access these from most buildings in Downtown, including the JP Morgan Chase Tower. On a weekday, during business hours, wonder around in the air conditioning and grab lunch under the city!
